Labour Day Weekend- Chapman Pool

The last weekend in February was our Labour day weekend so we decided to go down south with Dren and JB and camped at Chapman Pool, just off the Blackwood River. Sadly Cody had other committments so he opted to stay in Rockingham for the weekend. It was very strange without him along; Brett tried hard to take his jobs like setting up the boys tent with Wade and he kept a close eye on Travis to make sure he was doing his job as well..... But we had a great spot and the weather was lovely and hot so we made the most of the river. Even I went swimming every day!!
The kids had a blast on JB's blowup boat, flipping it, doing bombies, and just having a grand old time.

Travis spent hours in the kayak, paddling from one side of the river

to the other side of the river.

When he wasn't paddling, he was busy catching little fish and keeping them in a bucket.

Looking down river, where we swam up to get to the Blackwood. Jessica and Natasha having fun swimming...

Dren and JB took their dogs along and the kids had great fun taking them for paddles in the kayaks.

Milo's not too sure what all the fuss is about. (Travis is still hitting the river banks)

To cap off the fun, Dave and JB made a rope swimg above the river and the kids (the big ones too!!) had a great time jumping into the deep waters of the river. It was a little dangerous, the kids had to let go on time or they'd land on the rocks down below....but thankfully there were no accidents and they all had fun.

Brooke playing in the mud at the bottom of the rope swing.

Looking out on the Blackwood River from the lookout at the rope swing.

Sunday we went to Busselton church and caught up with Ray and Theresa again... always great to catch up with friends!!

And before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back home, and back to school and work!

Term 1

Wow, I can't believe how quickly time flies by!! Term 1 of school is already finished and I haven't posted any blogs at all!! Sorry about that... I'll try to fill you in quickly.
The term actually went by very smoothly and quickly (it was only a 9 week term, so I may be excused to some degree!!) We filled the term with a few exciting things...

Once the kids went back to school, we organised a birthday party for Brett with his fellow class mates. 12 excited boys came to celebrate and had a great time. They came after school 'til 7pm. Sadly all our cameras had flat batteries so we didn't get any photos of the cake or blowing out of candles but we dug around and eventually found a camera we could use and managed to photograph some of the fun games they played:

They all wanted to go in the pool (of course!!) and so they played a water relay game...

Then started shivering during the bombie competition

Playing dunking for lollies

Brett and Tyrone trying to outdo eachother in the balloon relay

Pass the orange under the chin... They also played the Smartie game and a Space ship game before they finished with a final game...

...of treasure hunt which had the boys searching from the kitchen, to the playroom and out the back

to the laundry and the car

and in Brett's veggie garden and then back to the kitchen where they found their treasure of loot bags! They really enjoyed the hunting!

After a sausage sizzle for dinner it was time for the boys to be picked up. Here they are waiting in the tree...where else would boys wait???

Back to School

The end of holidays always means Back to School. This year we had a few changes to our routine. Travis has started grade 1 and is now at school full-time, looking ever so grown up in his school uniform. He's lost his 2 bottom teeth as well to really look like a grade 1er! He cheerfully heads off to school every day.

Brooke now goes to Middle school and so her uniform has changed as well, and she's off on the bus every morning with the other high schoolers. This means from 7:30 til 8:30 I only have Brett and Travis at home. Brooke's loving school and making lots of new friends.
Cody has also changed his ways. Because he's doing 5 TEE's plus religious studies he gets to have Wednesdays off to do homework. So I realised I will never have a year that all my kids will be at school 5 days a week! Not that I mind too much.
I'm also trying to work Tuesdays and Thursdays and swim or excercise every Monday and Thursday morning. So my days are rather busy, if I'm not working I'm washing or cleaning or filling the pantry again and again. Those all seem to be endless jobs that always need to be done!

Australia Day and Youth Camp

Our last week of holidays was another jam-packed week. On Tuesday was Australia Day and we celebrated in Baldivis style. We had our annual Breakfast and Boating day, with lots of good food, fun and fellowship before most of us headed down to the beach for a day of boating. The weather was beautiful and the boats and jetskis kept everyone well entertained for hours.
That evening we went to Grandma and Grandads to watch the Australia Day fireworks, as well as to farewell them. The next day they left for a 6 month trip around Australia.

The next day was our first ever Baldivis Younger Youth Camp. Dave and I were 2 of the camp leaders along with Graham and Marion, Hendrik and Jackie, and Keith and Alice. We had 32 kids to keep entertained for 3 nights and we did our best! We left for Busselton at lunch time, had enough time to set up and go for a swim before our Mexican evening began. We all had a great evening eating Mexican food, listening to Mexican music and playing Mexican games. The pinata was a great hit.
The next day we went to the Giant's cave and took the kids through in 2 groups. They all did it, even though some were worried or scared. What an adventure. In the middle of the cave our group turned off all their torches and we played a game of finding eachother in the pitch black. We ended up forming a circle with no one missing. It's quite something to experience such pitch black darkness! After caving we took the kids to Margaret River and after lunch we split them into 4 groups to play Bigger and Better. Each team was given a coloured paperclip and were told to go through town and trade for something bigger and better. The kids had a great time while us leaders relaxed over a coffee. After 2 hours we all met back again to see the bargains each team had received. Wow, what a surprise! One group ended up with an $80 coffee plunger and some coffee to go with it as well as a handful of other things. The other teams came back with jewellery, t-shirts, notepads and all sorts of things, even a tire!!
That evening, after a delicious dinner of fish and chips thanks to Keith and Alice, Rev Hart entertained the kids with a movie on persecution and then a related activity. We were split into several churches, and some were government police who handed us notes to eg. hand over our pastor, give names of our church members etc, and we had to decide what to do. In the end I think most of our churches had been killed for their faith. It was a real eye-opener for all of us because there wasn't always a right or wrong way to do things and sometimes, no matter what, your loved ones were killed.
Friday was our boating day. We took all the kids to Molloy Island and spent a full day behind and in the boats. Everyone had a blast. After a late dinner, we took the kids to the beach to play a number of games. Another fantastic day.
Saturday was pack up time, and free time before we headed back home.
Hopefully I'll add some photos later.... need to some scrounging around for some.

Swimming Lessons

After our fun camping experience, we had 2 weeks of swimming lessons. This year we did them at the outdoor pool, rather than the beach. I quite like coming home clean, rather than salty and sandy! Cody decided to work instead, since he's already gone as far as you can go and Wade also decided to earn some money so our lessons were a little different this time round; not quite a family event. I guess that's another sign of the kids growing up!
Our lessons were all at 8:45 and 9:30 so no sleeping-in for 2 weeks! I decided to re-do my Bronze since I had to be at the pool every day anyway and it doesn't cost any extra when doing it in a family group booking. It felt wonderful to be able to swim every day. And getting my bronze was an added bonus!
Travis ended up in a 1/2 class since it was his first time doing swimming lessons. Before we began, he hardly liked swimming, wore floaties and barely put his face in the water! At the end of our lessons, he now swims in our pool without any floaties, but still needs his goggles! He did very well at swimming lessons and passed both stages. He can hardly wait for the next set of lessons.
The others all did very well, although Brooke will be repeating her stage next time. But 2 weeks swimming with friends was a great way to end our school holidays. Although we still had 1 more week before we all had to go back to school...

Christmas Holidays in Esperence

For our Christmas holidays this year we decided to go to Esperance with Willem and Linda and Hendrik and Jackie. We left on Wednesday, and our first night we spent alone at Lucky Bay. Esperance has absolutely beautiful beaches, and Lucky bay, in Cape LeGrande national park is no exception. We managed to find a spot for the night in their little campground and quickly set up camp. Our camp had a number of visitors, kangaroos coming to check out the newcomers and also some awesome looking perenties. We saw quite a few of them sunning themselves on the roads around Frenchman's Peak. Thursday morning we summoned up some energy and climbed up the Peak. Wow, it's a good climb, not for the fainthearted as it's just a climb straight up the rock face, no proper paths or ropes to help you along. Needless to say, the kids did a good job of waiting for me to catch up and at the top the kids had a ball exploring the little cave while I caught my breath. It was well worth the climb though, and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to do something a little more strenuous.

Our campground visitors...

The view from the top, looking over Lucky Bay.

The following afternoon Willem and Linda came to join us. Since Lucky Bay was rather crowded with the Christmas crowds, we decided to move camp and set up our camp right on the beach at Dunn Rock. The sand was so white we needed sunnies; it was super fine and very clean. White clothes were still white after a week of camping!!! The photo on the left is what we saw every morning when we woke up from our caravan window. The kids had a hoot on the waves, from the youngest to the oldest, they could all pick their level of wave. Further back the waves were bigger but closer in they just gently rolled in. Excellent for boogie boarding. On Saturday afternoon Hendrik and Jackie joined us on the beach and wow did we have a week of great fun, good food and fantastic fellowship.
With boogie boards, fishing rods and kayaks, and a cupboard full of board/card games the kids were never bored. Cody had a few too many girls around, and no boys his age other than Wade so he got into some nailpolish mischief. The guys had to stand on the roof of the cars to get any kind of phone reception, but they managed to send a few text messages out!!

About a km down the beach there were huge, brilliantly white sand dunes. The kids had a blast taking their boards down them. The walk up was a bit tough, and they could've used a ski lift or 2 but the joyride down was sooo worth the effort they kept going back for more.
Just past the dunes was a brackish stream entering the sea. That's where us ladies went for "showers". All the girls would jump into the car and we'd drive down for our evening bath. It's amazing how clean hair makes you feel so much better!!
We spent a relaxing Christmas day enjoying the beauty that was around us. We also had the privilege of listening to one of Rev Schouten's sermons. And of course the yummy food abounded. It was a wonderful day.

On Tuesday we decided to do something civilised and we all went to Esperance. After a morning of doing our own thing in town - like laundry for me, and getting some more fresh food, while the kids did some window shopping, we all went to the local pool for a good long swim. After a week of no showers or running water, it felt like a luxury to be able to have a good shower! And the kids really enjoyed the pool. To cap off a great day we all went out to a lovely chinese restaraunt for dinner. Wow, all clean, and no cooking!!
Our last night at camp was New Year's Eve, and wow, what a New Year's it was. Definitely one we will always remember as the night of the tides. During the week we had noticed that each night the water came a little higher. The night before New Year's the water had lapped at the back of Willem's ute. For New Year's the tide charts said high tide would be at 11pm. Well, our evening began with a great dinner together. By 8 pm, though, the tide was starting to come in, and the camp site was starting to get a little wet. As the hours went by, we made little walls out of sand and seaweed to protect our tents, while the others packed their tents up. The kids had a blast calling out wave alerts and Willem was busy making his Oliebollen. Although he was more than ankle deep in water, he was merrily making his Oliebollen. It was rather very comical. We were going to have Oliebollen.... did I mention Willem's Oliebollen??!! At 11pm, although everyone was running around in shorts or with their pants rolled up, we had 'saved' our tents and it looked like we had weathered the tides rather well. So just before midnight we sat down to read and pray to finish off the old year before welcoming in the new. Just after prayer, as we were looking for a watch for the final countdown and getting ready to fill our glasses for our cheer of "cheers", Erin yelled "Wave" and this big wave came rolling into camp. It was still at the height of the caravan steps as it came rolling in. It went up the sides of our tents, and wreaked havoc in our campground. I made a mad dash to save our camping cupboard containing Brett's birthday presents which had fallen over and was floating... but in the process tripped over a full water container which, moments before had been sitting behind the caravans! Fortunately our tents are good ones and the insides stayed relatively dry. So we all spent the next while packing up camp and heading to drier ground. It took a bit of hunting around to find all our bits and pieces back - our towball had been buried under the sand!! A good lesson for those who wish to camp on the beach. Beware of the tides!! (apparently Dunn Rock's tides come in an hour later than in Esperence... now they tell us!!) It was such a comical evening that it turned into a great adventure, and not a great disaster. We actually got to bed as the sun was coming up on New Year's Day!!

From Dunn Rock we said good bye to Hendrik and Jackie and spent the next few nights at Starvation Boat Harbour. Another lovely little bay, although the white sand was gone but instead we had lots of rocks and rock pools to explore with millions of shells of all shapes and sizes. Needless to say, Travis can spend days hunting on the beach for the perfect shell!
January 2nd is Brett's birthday so we celebrated his birthday with a morning coffee with Willem and Linda before they headed on to Busselton. Brett was ecstatic over the money he received from them as he's been saving up for a Ripstick. (grandma and grandad's present gave him enough to buy one so straight to the shops Dave had to go! Now Brett's the proud owner of a Ripstick and wiggles through the house like a pro!!)

We spent the next couple of days exploring the area and finding other interesting places.

On our way home we stopped off in Katanning and enjoyed their big park with their super big slides. A great way to stretch your legs and have some fun.

And then it was homeward bound.

Brett's big surprise when we came home! Happy birthday buddy!
